Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition

I was in extremely august company on Saturday:

Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton, former President of the Royal Society

Yes, I was in the heart of London at the exceedingly beautiful home of the Royal Society. I’d been invited there to take part in this year’s Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition:

My invitation came as a result of my Buzzing! book having been shortlisted for last year’s Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize.

So I performed a special Buzzing! show there, inspired by a former Fellow of said Royal Society, one Charles Darwin.

I had the good fortune to chat with some of my audience before and after my show, and what a lively, bright, interesting and interested bunch they were. (And how very complimentary their accompanying adults were about my show!)

After my book signing I took the opportunity to look around at some of the exhibits at the exhibition. Fascinating!

The Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition is an annual event showcasing the most exciting cutting- edge science and technology in the UK. And it’s all free! If you’re interested in science, I definitely recommend you go next year. As you’ll see from the Royal Society website, there are events specially for children, and ones for adults too.

My tip: if it’s raining, take a brolly as you might have to queue to get in – it’s that popular! (And rightly so!)

Thank you to Marie-Claude Dupuis of the Royal Society and her band of helpers for ensuring my event ran so smoothly.

Berberis sawfly larvae 2014

They’re back! For the ninth year in a row I’ve found Berberis sawfly larvae nibbling our Berberis bush:

To read the full Berberis sawfly larva story, click here and scroll back through the posts. Tip: It’s a long (but thrilling!) story, and includes the Natural History Museum in London and a World First for me here in Heslington. You might want to brew a cuppa before you embark on the saga …

Alternatively, if you want to hear all about it in person, then I’ll be telling the tale (the abbreviated version!) as part of my Buzzing! show the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in London this coming Saturday (5 July) from 1pm. Entrance is free. No need to book. See you there!

Buzzing! anew

I’m delighted to be able to announce that the first print run of Buzzing! has sold out! So, whereas my Buzzing! book used to look like this:

It now looks like this:

Yes, the second print run has a slightly different front (and back) cover, and now proudly bears the logo of the Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize.

I first got to see this new impression at the Hay Festival, where halfway through my book signing the books changed from old to new covers.

I’d like to guarantee anyone who bought a copy of the first print run that – if they keep it in pristine condition – it will one day be worth as much as a first edition of the first Harry Potter. However, although I’ll do my best, I don’t think that’s a guarantee I can guarantee!

Instead, I suggest you take your copy of Buzzing! outside with you and start putting it through its paces as you enjoy looking for the creatures that appear in its pages. That’s what the book is for. Enjoy!

If you’d like me to sign a copy of the new-look Buzzing! for you, then come along to the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in London on Saturday (5 July), where I’ll be performing my Buzzing! show at 1pm and signing books afterwards. Entry is free! See you there …

And if you can’t make London on Saturday, you can always order signed copies (with a personal dedication, if you’d like) from my website.

Exciting times!

A big thank you to Dafydd Lewis, Secretary of the Amateur Entomologists’ Society, for sending me this photo, which he took at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in London last week. If you look closely, you’ll see my Buzzing! book there, one of the six  contenders for this year’s Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize.
